Game benchmarks for M1 Mac mini with 8gb ram inside!

Game benchmarks for M1 Mac mini with 8gb ram inside!
I picked this up and am now busy running various games. I will be posting my thoughts, results, screenshots, and settings used below. When I test games, I strive to reach a balance of reasonable FPS for the genre with decent graphics settings. I don't strive for 60 FPS lock, unless it's FPS, MOBA, or an Action game. One more thing, In most cases I recommend turning on v-sync, especially if your FPS is north of your monitor's refresh rate (typically 60 hz). It makes things a lot smoother from my experience. Finally, the built-in screenshot tool accounted for 1-5 FPS depending on the game, so your actual FPS will be slightly higher.
*UPDATE*
<11/23> I have some bad news. I decided to pull the plug on this project. Being a detail oriented person, I noticed I spend very high amounts of time in my benchmark and optimization process. And that's not even taking editing and narrating into account for the YouTube thing. And being a perfectionist, I won't settle for subpar content. To keep this up, along with other multiple real life activities I partake in, is simply unrealistic. In fact, I'm already quite burnt out, which is starting to affect my real life responsibilities. Apologies for the disappointment - I hope you eventually find what you're looking for! And thank you for all your support and kind words. They really helped me with this CVS receipt of a post.

*PERFORMANCE TESTS*

iOS Apps: unable to resize or fullscreen windows. Default size is tiny on my desktop (3840 x 1600). For some apps, this means practically unusable. I can't imagine running iOS Civ 6 or XCOM 2 like this. Screenshot on Roll for the Galaxy attached for reference.
Steam: Runs...laggy via Rosetta. If you have a lot of games, scrolling your library has significant lagginess involved and also jumps around. Not sure if Valve will address this. Edit: tried “Disable GPU acceleration and smooth scrolling” and it's fixed!
Civ 6 (Steam): This mini is a silent beast! Fan didn't even kick on wow... Late game using built in benchmark gives me 30 fps minimum 54 fps maximum. Detailed settings used attached. Onto next game!
This War of Mine (Steam): Starts loading then crashes to desktop...
Offworld Trading Company (Steam): This game is a niche favorite of mine. Notorious for being poorly optimized and hard to run. Averaged 23-24 FPS using decent settings - which I consider really good for the game. Fan dead silent. Is my fan broken?? I'm very impressed.
The Long Dark (Steam): Minimum 46 FPS, maximum 76 FPS indoors. Settings and resolution in attachment. Fan still silent. I touched my Mac and some parts of it are cold??? Post FX settings and resolution had the biggest effect on performance. V-Sync doesn't seem to cap FPS...
League of Legends: Runs extremely well. Although v-sync is turned on, it doesn't seem to cap the FPS. Also noticed it in The Long Dark. I was getting FPS in the 60's. Settings posted below. Also, built in screenshot tool wasn't working, so it's via phone. The lobby client doesn't seem to detect that you finished a game when you exit. You may have to restart client between games.
Dota 2: This was actually tricky to find the optimal settings. I was aiming for 60+ FPS with some eye candy during moderate action. Although it can play higher resolutions with more sparkle, the FPS suffers. In the end I resorted to the settings attached in the screenshot. Also, use of the Vulcan API seems to still make a positive difference over the OpenGL in the game settings.
Cities: Skylines: I didn't have an already built city to test and it was taking forever to grow my village to a decent size - so only early game testing was done. Also, there was only one 21:9 resolution available, which means I couldn't tune down resolutions in the 21:9 ratio. I did three separate tests on this, one on 16:9 resolution and two on 21:9. Game ran decently well on the fastest game speed, but I assume late game will bog it down somewhat. Detailed stats below.
Stellaris: Starts loading but hard freezes at 5%. Music still plays and mouse movable, but Command Q and Command tab were both not working. I had to force restart the mini to exit. Edit: apparently this is a known issue. I will retest next week on MacBook m1 /16 gb (already uninstalled. This machine is temporary)
World of Warcraft: Ran natively. Performance was insane! Screenshot tool had some impact on this game, but I made note of it in the comments. It also hard froze once while changing settings. I'm level 5 so I didn't get to bench massive fights. One of the few games I can max pretty much everything at 3840 x 1600 and still get 70+ FPS. I actually turned that down in benchmark images to account for bigger fights. Best part? Dead silent. Cold to the touch at some parts. :)
CS:GO: Does not make it to the main screen. Entire screen is black.
FTL: Runs! No screenshots or FPS testing - was strictly for compatibility.
Into the Breach: Runs! No screenshots or FPS testing - was strictly for compatibility.
Starcraft 2: The performance difference between medium and low shaders was dramatic. I tried to keep medium because it was notably better (realistic shadows, lighting, etc). In the end, given the game's competitive nature and propensity for bigger engagements, I lowered down the settings. In very early stages of 2v2 I averaged 90-110 FPS. Medium stage was in the 60's. Brief dips to 40-50's occur sometimes. I imagine late game will run mostly near high 40s to 50s. I also noticed M1 has some sensitivity to post fx more than most graphics cards. During the time I used medium shaders, looking at Protoss spawning graphics took away 10-20 FPS. I also read that online play against real people will force 16:9 ratio for 'fairness.' I feel Blizzard's logic is a bit flawed, but I can see how they arrived at this. (reminder: screens are now on Imgur due to Reddit image limit)
Diablo 3: Low 60 to High 80 FPS depending on activity. Again, I recommend turning on V-Sync, it'll make your gameplay smoother. Images posted on Imgur. Settings weren't maxed, but they were still decent. Settings were turned down because I was aiming for 60 + FPS regardless of activity level
CK2: Getting the error message, 'You do not have permission to open the application' despite being an admin user. The googled solution of manually changing executable read/write setting did not resolve the issue. Edit: Information is flying around that a beta Mac update fixes the issue. I will reinvestigate!
Hollow Knight: 3840 x 1600, maxed everything and runs at 100 FPS without v-sync. I recommend leaving v-sync on when playing. The excessive FPS (my monitor is 60 hz) was causing choppy gameplay if I left it off.
Kerbal Space Program: I don't have much experience with KSP, but after seeing how playable this was, I'm going to address that. First, I wanted to see how it would run with default settings and from orbit. The resulting graphics were gorgeous with acceptable FPS, but I knew it wouldn't cut it for all scenarios. I still took a picture because it was amazing. Second scenario I loaded confirmed my suspicions, so I worked on fine tuning the settings. After much tinkering, I found a setting I was happy with that worked with above decent frames for most (all?) scenarios. Screens were taken of these too. Even if you don't play KSP, please check the first picture - it's amazing.
Minecraft: Ran extremely well at full resolution (3840 x 1600) with high settings. I could not set the graphics to 'fabulous' because the game would crash. I increased the render distance to 14 chunks because it was performing so well. Low's were in the 60's and high's were in the 80's. This was from flying high above and zooming around to see if I could tax the system. It didn't turn on the fan. In fact, I still don't know what my fan sounds like. I expected the Mac to download java, but it seems like it was already installed. I haven't tried to fancify it further via 3rd party graphics plugins yet. Screens on Imgur, as noted below.
Minecraft with fancy shaders:
Factorio: Game was benched using a 'megabase' (extremely large factory) with no mods. Default settings ran decently considering the huge amount of things going on. Lowering the sprite resolution from high to normal was necessary to hit average FPS of high 30's. Resolution was set to 3840 x 1600 and view was zoomed all the way out. I tried to set the view on a busy part of the map. Images are on Imgur (find Waldo!) and save file is here (Reminder: you have to right click image on Imgur and open in new tab to view the full resolution): https://www.reddit.com/factorio/comments/gely3v/20000_science_per_minute_hybrid_modular_megabase/
------In an effort to reduce redundancy, games below this line will only receive previews before its video counterpart-----
Dolphin: Dolphin is a Wii emulator and the performance depends on a lot of things, including the game being run. I decided to choose a relatively demanding game, Super Mario Galaxy 2. While it's possible to run this well with minimal quality, I wanted the most optimal setting possible for the mini, even on the more demanding scenes. (60 FPS target, with as much sparkle I can enable) In an effort to reduce redundancy and confusion, I won't cover all the variable changes, notes, and warnings here. Some settings were not as they seemed, and I don't want to confuse users new to advanced emulation. But gameplay screens have been posted to show you what you can expect running with an optimal, performance-oriented setting.
XCOM 2: M1 Macbook 16 gb arrived sooner than anticipated, so I benchmarked this game on the system. I was anxious to test one of my favorite games, and I may have spent a little too long trying to optimize this. XCOM 2 was infamous for being poorly optimized so I expected it to run poorly - especially the 'Lost' level where hordes of zombies surround you. Sadly my expectations proved correct. This has been one of the worst performing games so far. Still playable, but I managed around 25-30 FPS for that level. Screenshots show low 30's, but that's due to camera being held static. During explosions it would drop even further, sometimes to 15-19. I also heard the M1 fan eventually spin up and get warmer for the first time - so it's reasonable to infer that the fanless MacBook Air would have a harder time running this for extended durations. Resolution was 1440 x 900. Although performance could be improved a bit by lowering the resolution even further, I consider 900p the absolute minimum for pleasant gaming. FPS, though important, is not everything that makes a game 'feel good' - even for a turn-based game. It's the balance of screen resolution, FPS, and different quality settings that forge the feeling that we all desire. Screens have been posted on Imgur and I intend to go more in-depth in the follow up video.

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Crossover Performance: I made a separate section for Crossover, because this requires additional tinkering of the wine environment - sometimes on a per game basis. Afaik, this is currently the only way to run x86 Windows games. I will try to explain what settings I used on all fronts to guide new users.

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

iOS app Roll for the Galaxy. Unable to resize or fullscreen
Civ 6 - minimum 30 FPS
Civ 6 Tried to catch Max. Saw 54 FPS
Detailed settings used via fullscreen
Offworld Trading Company - early/Mid game, averaged 23 FPS
Detailed settings. Changing them didn't matter much for this game. (Game known for being unoptimized and hard to run)
The Long Dark - indoors FPS 76 FPS
Outdoors FPS 46 FPS
Settings part 1
Settings part 2
League of Legends - Screenshot tool unresponsive. FPS in the 60's. V-Sync doesn't seem to cap FPS.
Detailed settings. V-Sync was turned on. If you get a black screen while changing settings, tabbing out and back in seems to fix it.
Dota 2 - Had to lower quality to achieve near 60 FPS stable during significant action.
Detailed settings. Note the Vulcan API.
Cities: Skylines - early game. Don't mind my village lol
Detailed 21:9 settings. Only one 21:9 resolution available so I had to lower most other settings down to keep the resolution.
2nd try with even lower settings. Not much difference - at least on the early game stage
Setting used for 2nd try
3rd try, this time using 1920 x 1080. It is ran on windowed mode because fullscreen would stretch to fill my entire screen. Windowed mode may have a slight negative effect on performance.
Detailed 16:9 settings
Ran into Reddit image limit. Rest of the images are posted on Imgur. Also, using mobile to access Imgur user post page does not work... You need a computer browser unfortunately.

First impressions with the G2

First impressions with the G2
First off, this is a great headset. I feel privileged to have received it so early and am loving the experiences I am having with it.
This is going to be my daily driver until the next big leap in headsets, I do not regret pre-ordering it in any way and if you pre-ordered it, don't worry you will have great fun. The Reverb G2 is way better than the Rift S and Lenovo Explorer (that's all I have to compare it with). If I were given the choice, even with my criticisms, I would buy the G2 again - it is a generational leap, think PS1 vs PS2. It's not a PS3, but at least you can see what's going on.
With that said, I am going to be critical and compare the headset a lot to the Rift S, that doesn't mean it's bad, but it will hopefully provide some balance to the overwhelmingly positive reviews this headset got before release.
If you have any specific questions, games or experiments you want me to run, let me know and I'll add them to this.
I will be updating this as I clock more hours in the headset. For now I took the day off work and have spent an entire whole day playing mostly Half Life: Alyx, Onward and Boneworks. It's annoying (in a good way) because I want to play them through from the start but I also want to play them all right now. Feeling really enthused right now.
Notes
I realised that I was playing games using automatic resolution which may have masked the performance of the 5700xt. I will be extending the reviews to include what the performance and clarity looks like when sampling is set at 50%, 100%, 150%.
Looks like the auto setting had my games running at 40% super sampling. Just tried 150% super sampling in Skyrim and quick preliminary write up. I am blown away. It's seriously seriously unbelievable. People in the far away distance look like they would appear on a 1080p monitor. The game runs at 50fps though. I ran the stock game but I will be running through it using mods when I get to it properly.
FPS benchmark json files to read in the fpsVR viewer https://drive.google.com/file/d/1gjpoSQzg-0qdaqNiS-Ig1laNNM_gyjOW/view?usp=sharing
Specs
My computer is mid-ranged:
Motherboard Asus Prime B450-PLUS AM4 ATX
CPU AMD Ryzen 5 3600 6 Core
Graphics Card Radeon RX 5700 XT 8G
I believe the 5700xt graphics card performs around the same as a 1080ti or 2070
Context
My first headset was the Lenovo Explorer, so I started my journey in WMR and am used to the ecosystem. The "house on the hill" menu and the interconnectivity with Steam, etc.
Charmed by VR I upgraded to a Rift S, which I imagined would be a huge step up and it honestly wasn't. The Oculus software was a bit of a germ, only allowing me to install it on the C drive and all sorts of crap. Heavy, janky and my general experience with it was "finding the quickest route to Steam VR"
Setting up the Oculus play space was great, though. You'd do so from within the headset, where the headset passes through the outside world into the headset and I would point at the ground with the controller and draw the border on the floor. With WMR you have to hold your headset in your hand and walk around the perimeter of your play space with the headset at stomach height, tracing the border with it that way.
The Rift S controllers were the big step up from the Explorer. The Rift S had smooth, responsive controllers that felt very premium and of everything, they were the big upgrade from the Explorer.
Setting up the G2
We are all early adopters of VR and with that comes jank! It's a crazy cool technology and we put up with a little bit to get it all up and running. Might be worth not expecting a perfect plug and play experience right away, you may have some teething pains getting set up as I did, but everything ended up just fine.
After unboxing the headset, I quickly rushed to my computer and plugged it in. My motherboard has USB-C so I tried that. I was greeted with an error:
Your headset failed to start at 90Hz. Make sure your headset's cables are plugged in correctly
Error code: 13-14
This is no fault of HP, my 5700xt has been very janky for VR even with the Rift S. So I updated my graphics drivers to the latest "optional" (beta?) Radeon ones and that did the trick.
I got another error related to the USB-C port, so I used the included adapter and plugged the headset into a USB 3.0 port and everything was fine from there (note, the USB 3.1 port did not work either).
From there everything was working great and I jumped into Steam VR to start my session.
Steam VR 100% resolution
In Steam VR settings the 100% custom render resolution is 3164 x 3092 but I have been playing everything at "auto".
Windows has the resolution of the screen as 4320 x 2160 (2160 per eye). I assume this means that "100%" to steam is actually 150% super sampling.
I guess "auto" will downsample as required for my PC specs. I will try manually mess with the sampling settings.
First Impression
Holy Sh\t.) Holy Shi*t. Super high clarity. The screen was so bright. The colours are so vibrant. I kind of felt the difference was like opening your eyes fully when you'd been squinting the whole time you were in the Rift.
The FOV was slightly wider in the G2 and that's nice. The head tracking also feels a little tighter than the Rift and strangely I fell less discomfort/nausea in the G2.
I remember moving from the Explorer to the Rift and noticing the head tracking in the Rift being a bit worse and causing discomfort.
The headset itself is very well balanced, the straps are great and let me customise the headset to my head perfectly. It's well balanced and the foam cushion is nice - great for long play sessions - better than the Rift S for sure.
Sucks when getting other people to use the headset, I share it with my partner and adjusting it to her head every time is a little annoying, but the comfort boost is worth it. There are worse things in life than taking 30 seconds to adjust a strap - haha.
Cable length is great.
EDIT: I might be a little overly critical of the controllers because I had so much pent up expectations for the headset and after some play time they really didn't annoy me as much as I rag on them below, but nicer controllers would have been better for sure.
Controllers
The Feel
The controllers feel a little out of out of place with the rest of the headset, honestly. The headset itself is very very high quality, the plastics feel premium. The HP logo looks tasteful and lights up subtly. It feels like so much attention to detail was paid to the headset and then we get these toy controllers.
They feel cheap in the hand. The button clicks are shallow and feel like those little 2mm switches. Occasionally I wouldn't actually notice when I press a button because the click isn't very decisive. I worry about the longevity of the controller buttons.
Jitter
I have experienced the Jitter of the Lenovo Explorer and don't worry, the G2 is much better than the first round of WMR headsets.
They were jittering a little. I played around with the room lighting and the jitter was minimal.
For comparison, the Lenovo Explorer would jitter relentlessly to the point where often I couldn't play certain shooting games. The G2's jitter is very mild, not enough to compromise aim in a game. I also experienced jitter with the Rift S touch controllers and I would say this is 95% as close.
It had a minimal impact on my games - I spent about an hour playing sniper in Onward and I never noticed controller jitter, though it popped up in HL: A and Boneworks when using pistols and rifles. My room is mildly lit with lights on.
Haptics
Haptics were nothing to write home about but I don't mind them. Some people have been trash talking them but I'd rather have them than not have them.
They don't break immersion for me, but I know it's really important to some. They were a little noisy and feel between the Lenovo and Rift in terms of fidelity.
Compared to other reviews, nothing about the haptics was offensive to me, but it's possible I don't have a taste for quality haptic feedback.
Ergonomics
The ergonomics feel like larger Rift S controllers, which I am neutral about. They are a bit heavier than the Rift S controllers which might impact me on longer play sessions - or maybe I just need to go to gym.
Latency
I mentioned latency earlier, this was my bad. I messed around with the WMR settings (documented below) and that sorted it right out.
The latency is identical to the Rift S and practically undetectable.
Okay, moving onto games.
Beat Saber (2 hours)
I figured it'd be the fastest game to get set up with. No complex controller bindings and quick load times. I am not Beat Saber master but can complete most songs on expert.
The atmosphere immediately feels more awesome. The game pops more and started seeing details I never noticed before. The neon colours looked more explosive the fog felt more foggy, the dots more dotty.
The headset is visually smoother than the Rift S and the controllers tight and responsive. The G2 will not hold you back if you're coming from the Rift S. The controllers are a little heavy though and my poor frail wrists didn't like some of the faster songs.
The headphones are really nice, obviously better than the Rift S. The quality is okay, probably similar to $40 over ear sennheiser headphones.
I preferred to use my Sony 1000xm4 headphones whenever I played anything more immersive (like HL:Alyx, Onward or Skyrim). I definitely prefer the sound quality of dedicated headphones over the ones built into the G2 and would have rather traded down the built in headphones to Rift S style in exchange for better controllers.
It's disappointing that there isn't an AUX port on the headset so upgrading the audio solution isn't an option.
I will be trying to pair my headphones via Bluetooth and use them over the built in headphones soon.

Half Life: Alyx

4+ hours
Quick note for 5700xt owners, the game is unplayable using Vulkan. The game flickers and dances, setting it to Direct X 11 fixed that. This was the same on the Oculus Rift S too.
I started playing this game on medium settings and bumped it up to ultra. Turns out the automatic resolution and game fidelity in the game engine is highly optimised. I turning off the auto adjustment via the console and ran the game at a fixed resolution. While not playable in the higher end resolutions, it looks crazy good. This headset has potential far above what the my hardware combination can deliver - but the game still looks amazing with the auto settings.
Using the automatic mode though, the detail in the game is STUNNING. I feel like I am playing it again for the first time. In that first scene on the balcony, I look down and can see people in the streets talking. I can see the feathers on the wings of the birds flying above me. It was spectacular.
I ran inside because I couldn't wait to play with the whiteboard markers.
Using the gloves to flick things to you was fine, using guns was great, reloading and gun play were all great.
I can not get over how incredible Half Life played. It was smooth as butter and the detail was unbelievable. I can not state this enough, unbelievable. I could read the text on the little microchips on the gloves.
The Vortogot looks craaaazy cool. You can see details in his eye as he blinks.
I found the level of detail so high that it increased the immersion.
I also felt less motion sickness when using continuous motion, but that might just be my VR legs getting a boost from my enthusiasm and on a long play through, the headset remained comfortable.
I pushed the settings up to Ultra with the render resolution set to auto. Will try again with different super sample settings.

Automobilista 2

30 minutes, seated, fanatec clubsport 2.5 racing wheel
My friend is a massive sim racing fan and he had a go with my G2. His exact words were
It feels like going from a CRT monitor to your first high definition LCD screen
He described that it changed the game for him and he was on the fence about upgrading from his Rift S but this is another level of immersion.
Personally, when sitting in the cockpit of the car, I could read the dials on the dashboard and they looked like reading text on a 1440p screen. No screen door effect and perfectly clear.
I can see considerably further down track and it's kind of like the upgrade between racing games for the PS1 and the PS2. You can see more, but it's still not a 4k 144hz monitor - not that I could afford the kind of PC needed to run that kind of headset.

Boneworks

2 hours
Dope dope dope dope dope dope dope dope.
Already loved this game but oh my god. The lines on the nullbody dudes are so crisp. In terms of performance, it ran, but struggled at some points.
The game did not come with controller bindings that worked for the G2. I spent 30 minutes stealing another binding and fixing it up for the HP controllers and intend to publish it to the Steam Workshop.
I spent 20 minutes in the arena and started a new story.
The game itself was perfect. Noticed no issues with gunplay, reloading/load weapons, time warp, movement, telekinesis. It felt very smooth and enjoyable.
The controller did get occasionally mildly jittery when aiming down the rifle, which I reset by dropping my aim down and bringing the sights back up. Didn't always fix it but yeah, hoping for a software fix to that.
As is customary in Boneworks, I have already punched my wall and can tell you the controllers are sturdy and can take a hit.
I felt less nausea than the Rift S and more comfortable in a long play session. When coming out of the Rift S, I would look like my face was sunburned around where I wore glasses (because of how tight the headset is on my face).

Onward

This headset is almost an unfair advantage. The view you get into the distance lets you spot people earlier. It's the only way I can play given they always spot me first close range - haha.
The buttons all mapped perfectly right away, which was nice.
All the basic expectations were met, grabbing the pistol from the hip while running was fine. Tablet over the shoulder was fine. Aiming was fine.
Grenade throwing was something I was anxious about but it's actually better than the Rift S.
It felt like the Rift S in all respects.
Using a rifle with a scope was the same as the Rift S - I had to hold my right controller in front, conscious of the tracking cameras. The higher resolution was very noticeable in the scope, very very clear.
Would be extra fun with a gun scaffold.
Gunplay was fine, though the larger controllers took a little adjusting to when I am used to not smacking together the Rift S controllers.
Once again, obviously, the visuals - oh my god.
It turned out to be a good test of the high resolution because looking down long distances in Onward (like down a street in Bazaar) in the Rift S, it would be hard to see people standing against the walls whereas the Reverb was much clearer, but still not perfect.
If the Rift was a 4 in clarity, the Reverb is a 7. It's honestly really clear.
Sitting in the spectating room and looking at the in game footage on the big screen, it looks like you're looking at a 1440p screen.

Suggestions for HP

Controllers
This headset is perfect in every way except the controllers feel a little bit cheap.
I realise it's too late for me but if HP were to offer a model of the Reverb with upgraded controllers with better tracking, also offering those controllers as an add on for existing headsets, you best believe I'd pre-order.
Off topic rant: Personally I don't see the fascination with AA batteries. I have been recharging my wireless controllers since ever and it's not like I died waiting for a controller to charge. I would prefer lighter controllers with built in lithium batteries but that's just my opinion.

Debugging for New Starters

Flickering screen and controller latency
Make sure you have your headset set to 90Hz in the WMR settings panel in the control panel. Windows might set it to 60 Hz and this will affect controller tracking, introducing latency and an annoying flicker.

Realm connection issues “solved” (Bedrock)

As of two days ago I (the realm owner) have been unable to join my realm. Another member has the same issue, we log on, run around for a few seconds and disconnect right back out. Another member can join like normal, played for hours unaware we had a problem. I’ve put a ticket into mojang but have had no response, and google has been no help at all.
Has anyone else had this problem? How did you fix it?
Edit: I fixed it. It turns out my friend, who I share consoles with, activated the beta on his account which somehow affected my own. By signing up for the beta, unenrolling from it and uninstalling/reinstalling Minecraft I am now able to play again.

Minecraft Beta - 1.16.210.53 (Xbox One/Windows 10/Android)

PLEASE READ before participating in the Minecraft Beta:
This week's beta is extra cool as we've made some changes to powder snow, along with some important bug fixes! Powder snow and goats are both Caves and Cliffs features that can be accessed by using the Experimental Features toggle in the world settings in this beta. For more information about the toggle, please head over to aka.ms/MCExperimentalToggle.

  • A freezing effect is gradually applied to the player and any mobs that are inside powder snow blocks
  • Freezing effect is removed from any mobs or players that catch fire
  • Players in survival mode can now turn damage from freezing effect on/off using game rule, e.g: "/gamerule freezedamage false"
  • Mobs that have sunk into powder snow now can navigate through it
  • Entities on fire now have their fires extinguished when stepping into powder snow
  • Redstone dust, torches and item frames can no longer be placed on powder snow
  • Gravity blocks no longer break when landing on powder snow
  • While within powder snow blocks third person camera is no longer pushed to the inside of the character's head

  • Goats are smart enough to avoid powder snow blocks when pathing
  • An entity walking through powder snow will make the correct step sound regardless of which block is being walked on
  • Wearing Leather Boots now allows entities to climb powder snow Blocks (MCPE-105410)
  • Powder snow Blocks have unique interaction sounds
  • When the camera is inside a powder snow block fog is rendered around it and an overlay texture is rendered on it
  • Buckets can be used to pick up and place powder snow
  • Powder snow blocks have a slightly different texture than regular Snow blocks
  • Entities can enter powder snow blocks, but their movement is slowed down while inside
  • Fall damage is ignored

Does anyone else remember the version of minecraft you could play on a website?

I might be losing my mind. I vividly remember the first time I played minecraft being with my older brother, on my mum's laptop, on a website, and I might just be thick but I can't find any trace of this website ever existing. It had the stone texture as the background, and the gameplay was on a smaller window, like you were watching a video. It sounds like some ripoff, but I'm certain it was called minecraft and ended with .net or .com or something proper, as well as none of the textures or gameplay being weird spinoffs of the actual game you could play through a launcher. Apparently back in the classic days you could play as a website, but all of them had classic alpha/beta textures, while i remember the game I played looking like 1.2 or 1.3, with the better coloured grass etc. I played for the first time after 2010, maybe 11 or 12. Again, I might be just dumb, since I only googled it a few times and went through the minecraft wiki. Does anyone else remember this, or was I playing some weird spinoff?

Bee SMP! {Semi-Vanilla} {1.16.4} {Semi-RP} {PvP} {Discord} {Looking for Young Adults}

Bee SMP! [Semi-Vanilla, Semi-RP, 1.16.4, PvP, Discord, Small Group]
Are you a Veteran Minecrafter who has been here since the beta, and looking for something new?
Do you enjoy semi-role play games with in-game conflict and unrealistic or untrue versions of yourself?
Do you want to play Minecraft and have a good time with a bunch of strangers?
Then the Bee SMP is the server for you!
Currently the Bee SMP Server has had many previous posts looking for members- and we already have a lot of approved applicants in mind! Unfortunately, the majority of these applicants are under 18, and we do have some older applicants that would feel more comfortable with more people their age on the server. So, if you’re 17+ you’ll have a hand up on the applications -^
Here’s a list of things we have to offer:
 1. Nothing -Featuring Literally Nothing So Far, we are a server based on being as unprepared for everything! Not only does the admin pointedly not know what she is doing, she is actively breaking down! :)
At the moment, we are looking for players to join our discord and get to know everyone that is already in the group before we get the server up and running.
The Bee SMP seeks to run similarly to an RPG, or a D&D game, where major plot points and conflicts are known about by a select group of “writers” for the server, who will then delegate information and ideas to players to do as they will. Nothing is scripted, yet everything goes along with the script!
Here’s an overview:
Sounds chaotic? Annoying? Totally not your style? Well, if you’re still reading you must be interested, so just comment down below for a link to our google forms!
If you wanna get to the forms quicker, it’s posted on my profile
To any mods reading this, the forms are just a way to get a hold of people’s discords and a way of seeing if we should contact them in the first place :)
And hey, if you submit a good form you’ll be treated to the second phase of the interview, a good ole’ voice call and some minigames.
Keep in mind, if your form is not well thought out and developed then there is a chance you will not be contacted for the second phase!
Hope to see your name on the list -^

RTX isnt "working" for me, even though...

...I meet all the requirements.
I have a RTX compatible GPU, the GTX 1660. (I have googled it and it says " Nvidia has released a new driver that allows ray tracing effects to be switched on in GeForce GTX 10- and 16-series graphics cards, such as the GTX 1080 and the GTX 1660. "
I have 16GB of RAM, the req is 8G. (Please tell me if it means that minecraft needs 8GB or my computer itself needs 8GB+, if Minecraft needs 8GB, please tell me how to assign this).
And i do have an i5, the i5-9400.
I have wanted to play RTX for a while, but it's never let me? I have changed my MCW10 to the RTX beta version in the Insider Hub, but i still get this requirement. By the way, MC is saying I don't meet the requirements, when i (think i) do, thats the problem. Please someone help with this.
IDK if I need to update my GPU drivers, as it says "Nvidia has released a new driver", but I am positive that I have updated my drivers.

Minecraft Downgrade Method

Ever since the minecraft ray tracing and OpenXR update, the vr version of the game is broken. When I finally figured out how to even load into the game, there is a massive hit on the framerate and shrimmering in the distance like never before. I also read that there are a lot of gameplay related bugs. The current state of the OpenXR implementation is unacceptable, so I dicided to roll back to the previous version.
A quick google search you would probably find this tool. There seems to be a step missing in the setup guide, you need to run the appx file after running MCLauncher.exe and download the verson you select (1.16.100.4 is the latest non OpenXR non beta version). After downloading the files there's a launch button if you click that you will just open Minecraft from the new folder created in MCLauncher folder and I don't know if the oculus minecraft vr launcher would detect that, haven't test though. So again, after downloading the file, just close the MCLauncher.exe and run the appx.
You may need to uninstall Minecraft and delete %LOCALAPPDATA%\Packages\Microsoft.MinecraftUWP_8wekyb3d8bbwe folder first.
Disabling vsync to unlock framerate, change gfx_vsync:1 to gfx_vsync:0 in %LOCALAPPDATA%\Packages\Microsoft.MinecraftUWP_8wekyb3d8bbwe\LocalState\games\com.mojang\minecraftpe\options.txt
After that, just open the minecraft vr launcher in oculus library. There will be notification ubout update, just press B then you will boot into the game. Runs great like old times, no bugs no flickering.
The one downside for me is there's now only the Color, Light and Shadow RTX map of Minecraft with RTX ray tracing worlds in the marketplace. I would love to run around in Neon District RTX in vr even without ray tracing.

I'm launching a project to archive all of the best Minecraft adventure/survival maps from 2011 that are now nearly impossible to find working download links to.

I started having a crave for older MC maps recently. Ones that I remember seeing as a little kid but never got the chance to play for whatever reason. However, I noticed that a lot of maps I wanted toplay no longer had working download links
Which is what gave me the idea to start a community project to archive people's favorite maps from the 2011 period of Minecraft. I genuinely think that if we all joined forces, we could preserve these lost pieces of history. I currently started an archive (link will be in post) of around 6 classic maps from the time period. It isn't much, but it's a start.
List of maps I've been able to find so far through using things like the Wayback Machine:
Abducted by a Creeper Crazyandventure!!! 2.2.1 Legend of Zelda Block To The Past SkyBlock1.1 (modified to work with Beta 1.7) SurvivalIslandv1 (yes it is the original) SurvivalOceanV1.0 Trapp3d
Maps I'm looking for:
Puzzlecraft: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lHIfsL9IwpU (the forum post link in the description works, but after adfly redirects you to where you'd download the map, the 2shared file is gone.)
Minecraft Adventure Map: Escape the Prison (Prison Break) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zPWXkHU-pLE&t=307s (no download link in the description)
As I said before, list your favorite maps down below (with download links if you can) and I promise to add them to the archive. My goal is to preserve these maps for future generations of Minecraft players, as they created the framework for all adventure maps to this day.
Up-to-date archive link: https://drive.google.com/file/d/1ZRc--wC4q36M8yUNEhvo2WXLHuJqQAzn/view?usp=sharing

The Ultimate Hytale FAQ

The Ultimate Hytale FAQ
The Ultimate Hytale FAQ
Hello! I normally post theories here, but for thanksgiving I decided to compile every question ever asked about the game Hytale here. Since its impossible to know every question ever asked, please comment new ones below to be added on the list. Also note that as more information is released this will be updated. Now without further delay, the FAQ...
About game modes
Q: Who are Varyn and Gaia?
A: Varyn and Gaia are two important characters to the main Hytale storyline.\)1\) Making appearances in several blogpost's, media and even the logo itself\)2\) we believe that Gaia and Varyn are two gods or god-like beings that fight for control of Orbis. Gaia the goddess of nature\)3\) and Varyn the lord of the void.\)4\) We don't know the exact details of how these two will affect the game, but we can assume that Varyn will be the main antagonist and Gaia will be a ally to the player. Gaia controls 5 of the 6 elements and is worshiped by many of Orbis's peoples.\)5\) Varyn has power of the element of void and leads an army of void creatures.\)6\)

Q:Will there be different Game Modes?
A: Yes! According to the Hytale website (https://hytale.com) there will be an Adventure mode, a Minigame mode and also multiplayer! With some observing of blogposts and gameplay it is confirmed that there will be a creative mode of some kind.\)1\)

Q:Can you choose a side? Ex. Fight for Varyn or Gaia?
A:There are factions in Hytale, most notably Kweebecs, Ferans, Trorks and Outlanders\)1\) and it is confirmed that you can gain 'reputation' with some of these factions from completing quests and objectives.\)2\) Now it isn't confirmed, however, that you would have the choice to join forces with Void creatures. We will have to wait and see.

Q:Are there large vehicles or vehicles at all?
A: Yes! Everyone loves vehicles. So far we have only seen a hot air balloon in the Announcment trailer,\)1\) but we also have had boats and other vehicles confirmed from the devs\)2\) and we have seen a small 1 person dingy.\)3\)

Q:Is there a leveling system?
A: No, there is no XP leveling system in Hytale for the players.\)1\) Now we do have screenshots of the player stats, and although old, we do see that there are core stats that can be increased through gear, specifically in "sets".\)2\) We also do know that there will be higher 'level' encounters throughout the zones 1-3 where certain enemies will be more powerful than lower tier counterparts

Q:Is there hunger and/or thirst?
A: Hunger has been confirmed by Noxy (Hypixel Studios CEO) and thirst has been hinted at by Noxy\)1\) and we have seen cups of liquid to drink.\)2\) The exact mechanics of hunger are not understood, but we do know that the hunger bar will be hidden when full and that eating food increases health regen\)3\) and thirst might be tied into Mana regen as hinted at by Noxy, but none of this is set in stone.\)4\) (Note: the clip this knowledge was taken from was later said to not represent the complete product well)

Q:What are Zones? Are they different from biomes?
A: Zones are the major areas that the Adventure Mode main storyline will take place in. So far 4 zones have been revealed and 2 more have been confirmed. Zones 1-4 represent a respective element. Zone 1 (The Emerald Grove) is Earth, Zone 2 (The Howling Sands) is wind, Zone 3 (The Boreal Forest) is water and Zone 4 (The Desolated Lands) is fire. Biomes are smaller ecosystems that exist within the zones. Since Zone 1 is generally green and lively, you can find forests, swamps, glades and jagged mountains in the extreme. Zone 2 is an arid climate and includes, deserts, savanna, canyons and oasis. You get the point.

Q:How are the zones layed out? How do you move from one to the other?
A: In the beginning of Hytale theory, everyone wanted to know where the zones were placed and although we don't have complete knowledge on the subject, the team has cleared up several questions on the world generation.\)1\) Zones 1-4 will be places in a single continent surrounded by ocean on all sides. The zones will not be placed in concentric\)2\) circles and you as a player can start in zones 1-3.\)3\) We have yet to see a border between the zones so we don't have a confirmation of this, but it can be assumed that you can travel between zones on foot. Some other possibilities however include portals that are scattered throughout the world in portal dungeons.\)4\) We do know that you can wander in between the zones.\)5\)

Q: How will magic work?
A: Hytale's magic has awed many and after seeing the elf in the trailer use a staff of ice to take out several skeletons people want to know how the magic will work.\)1\) The answer is we don't really know... So far it is believed all magic seen has correlated with the elements.\Citation Needed] [)3\)(Some question if the green orbs in the skeleton battle are correlated with earth\)4\)) you can cast spells with staffs, wands\)5\) and magic tomes. Mana is confirmed, but the mechanics are not known.\)6\)

Q: Will there be NPC factions?
A: Yes, we have had several revealed already! Namely Kweebecs, Ferens, Trorks and Outlanders, Slothians and Goblins!

Q: Can you interact with factions?
A: Yes, there are multiple different NPC factions in Hytale and their purposes are different from each other.\)1\) We do know that with some of the friendly factions like Kweebecs you can trade, accept quests and gain reputation.\)2\[)3\) Other factions like Trorks and Outlanders appear to be hostile to the player and we have yet to see an example of any friendly interaction between them.\)4\)

Q:What playable races are there?
A: Yes, the devs say that you can play as different races\)1\). We have current confirmation if Elves as a playable race. The dev's have stated however that there will not be extreme size differences in order to make PvP fair.\)2\)

Q:Will there be a redstone like item/system?
A: We do not have confirmation of a redstone like system. In the trailer we do see what looks like wires on the ground, but through extensive scripting there will likely not need to be a system like redstone and the wires are likely just decorative items.\)1\) The Dev's have been not only silent, but secretive on this question. When asked before they simply replied that they could no answer it as it was confidential.\)2\)

Q:Will there be cut scenes?
A: Due to the sandbox nature of Hytale it is unlikely that there will be cutscenes. However, there is an object called a "memory window" that could provide them if there are.

Q:What are the Alterversus? And can I go there?
A: In a Media concept art we are shown the 5 Alterverses and there is endless speculation to what they are. The team has been completely silent on the subject, but I can offer plenty of theories. The top ones are they are other worlds you can travel to through portals, Varyn is from Nexus and Gaia is from Numdrassle, and that they possibly all Orbis but from different times.

Q:Who is the Sand Empress?
A: The Sand Empress is hinted at in 2 media posts talking about the Scaraks. Although these are the only references we have of her, it is known that she is imprisoned at the bottom of the Scarak Sand Palace. This offers plenty of theories of whether she is a Scarak or possible a Feran, but currently this is not known at the moment.

Q:Will there be Stamina or Mana?
A: There will be Mana. Hytale promises that combat will be derived from skill rather than spamming and many believe that this means Hytale will have a Stamina and Mana based combat system. This is reaffirmed by the fact that there are two small bars under the heath bar in the player UI. However in the current combat clips we have, the two bar have not been touched. It is possible that they were disabled in the clips. We do know that Mana will be included as we have seen a Mana potion.

Q:Is the world randomly generated?
A: Yes, the world is procedurally generated and should be completely random for every world you play.\)1\) There will be similarities in some of the worlds however, such as the temple of Gaia being the same as it is a fixed location outside of the world.\)2\) The placement of the zones will also be similar, however if you travel past the deep ocean there will be a completely random are known as the infinite lands.\Citation Needed]) We have little information about these lands, but they will most certainly be random.

Q:Can you Tame animals?
A: Yes, taming animals is going to be a feature in Hytale. We have seen dogs, sheep, chickens, cows and rams all tamed. There is also horses and camels that could be ridden. The rest of the details are unknown however.

Q:What are Trorks and why are they called that?
A: Trorks are a faction in Hytale and are to be encountered in the Emerald Grove or Zone 1.\)1\) They form a brutish society and live in chiefdoms and camps that are guarded fiercely.\)2\) Although Trorks will be hostile to the player at first, we do know that they are not allied with Varyn and the Trorks could make possible allies. Trorks is the combination of the two races, Trolls and Orks. The name was put forward as a joke at first in the dev team, but it stuck and now we have the trorks we know and love.\)3\)

Q:Will there be a creative mode of sorts?
A: Yes, we have seen several examples of a 'creative mode' of sorts. In this you will have flying powers, unlimited health and access to tools such as copy and pasting, transforming into any creature you want and unlimited block access. Note: All of this information is from observation

Q:Will there be bosses?
A: Yes, We don't know the exact structure of how bosses are classified, but we do know that many dungeons include a boss or mini-boss. A good example of this is the Void Spider which is a boss for it's dungeon.\)1\) We also know that there are some harder enemies that could act like bosses, that are not necessarily tied to a specific locations. Some possibilities are the Ice dragon and Yeti.\)2\ [)3\)

Q:Will blocks have gravity?
A: Yes, there will be gravity for entities, as well as certain blocks such as trees.\)1\[)2\) The amount of gravity can be changed in a config file so your world can have the gravity of the moon or even less!

Q: Will Hytale have Floating Islands?
A: Yes, it was announced that not all blocks will have gravity applied to them\)1\) (see above) and we even have a screenshot with one in it!\)2\) Also there is a concept art featuring a floating island!\)3\)

Q:Will trees break if you destroy the trunk?
A: Yes, this was an answer I was serching for forever and couldn't find until @ Oaks on discord shared a link to an interview where Noxy (Hytale CEO) said that trees will collapse if you break the trunk.\)1\)

Q:Can you use 2 hands?
A: Yes, there will be two hand usage in the game. We have not yet seen two weapon fighting, but it has been hinted at. However, there are shields and you can hold an item along with a 1 handed weapon at the same time.

Q:Will there be alchemy/potions?
A: Yes, we know there will be potions and there is a alchemy station to make them. At the moment we don't know any recipes but there has been a Healing potion a Regen potion and a Mana potion confirmed

Q:Will there be enchanting? Crafting of magical items?
A: There will be magical weapons, but we have no indication that these can be craftable or if non magical weapons can be enchanted to become magical.

Q:How will crafting work and will it he like Minecraft's?
A: No, Crafting will not be based off of recipes in a 3x3 grid, but instead be similar to Terraria or other games where you need to collect the components and just press a craft button. Note: This information is 2 years old and could have changed, but it is all we have.

Q:Will the world be infinite?
A: Yes, the main zones will be finite in size but beyond them is an ocean and an area known as the infinite lands that will be infinitely generated forever.

Q:Is there Durability?
A: Yes, Durability has been confirmed
Q:Will there be a story?
A:Yes, there will be a story to Hytale.\)1\) This will be completed by travelling and completing challenges in the specific "Story Dungeons" \)2\)

About Multiplayer
Q: Will there be Multiplayer?
A: Yes, there will be several kinds of multiplayer in Hytale

Q:Will there be dedicated servers?
A: Yes, there will be large dedicated servers for all to enjoy on an in game server list

Q:Will there be local Multiplayer?
A: Yes there will be a local multiplayer function where you can play with a small group on your adventure worlds for free.

Q:Will the servers run cross-platform?
A: Since Hytale is not focusing on distributing Hytale to consoles I would assume not, simply because Hytale will not be available to multiple platforms other than Mac and Windows at launch. I would keep your eyes open for a console release later on however.

Q:Can you Monetize your servers?
A: Yes, there will be options to monetize your servers

Q:Will Hypixel move to Hytale?
A: No, Hypixel will stay in Minecraft and will not be discontinued after Hytales launch. However, there will be an official server run by the Hypixel studios team and could serve as a Hypixel server in Hytale and there is a possibility the Official server will in fact be Hypixel itself, but as a separate server entirely

Q:Will there be Parental Controls?
A: Yes, Hypixel studios promises extensive parental options for Hytale.

Q:Will there be a Realms for Hytale?
A: This has not been confirmed yet. It is reasonable to assume that Hytale will provide server hosting we do not know.

Q:Will there be an Anti-Cheat?
A: Yes, there will be an Anti-Cheat for servers and minigames. We do not know if it will be custom built or third party

Q:Can you turn off Anti-Cheat for anarchy servers?
A: We do not know.

Q:How many players can be in a server at one time?
A: So far we have seen around 100 players at one time in the trailer, but this will of course be limited to the hardware used for the servers as well.

About Modding and Tools and Tech
Q:Will there be mods?
A: Yes, Hytale is built with creators in mind and this includes modders

Q: Will there be an ingame showcase for my mods?
A: We do not know if Hytale will include a mod list like the one for servers, but I would not write it off

Q:Will there be modding API?
A: Yes, there will be extensive modding tools in the game that will help with mod compatibility after updates

Q:What language will modding be in?
A: The Client is in C#, but modding will be done outside of the client in Java and so will servers.\)1\ [)2\ [)3\) A Typeset language will be used for behaviors.\)4\)

Q:Can you mod the client?
A: No, the Hytale team will not allow the client to be modded citing hacking concerns. They promise, however that Hytale will be so customizable that it will not be needed

Q:Can you change the UI?
A: Yes, this will be available for servers

Q:What tools are available?
A: There will be in game scripting, Copy and paste functions, the Hytale model maker and Hytale Animator, Block Tech like RBG values and AI behaviors. These have all been confirmed

Q:Are the Modding tools free?
A: Yes, the base tools are confirmed to be free for everyone to use

Q:Can servers be modded?
A: Yes, and they can even use mods that you don't have through a sort of client handshake process

Q:Will Hytale have VR?
A: Not at release, the Hytale team is focusing on shipping the game to Windows and Mac and they have said that they will worry about console releases and extras post release.

Q:What platforms will Hytale run on? Consoles?
A: Windows and Mac are going to be available at release. The game client is not confirmed to work on Linux, but the servers can run there. There will not be console editions at release.

Q:Can Hytale run on low-end PC's?
A: The Hytale team promises improved optimization and if that isn't enough, a wide variety of sliders and options to make Hytale run on just about any computer.

About Company stuff and Minecraft
Q:Was Hytale Acquired by Riot?
A: Yes, Hypixel Studios, the company that is making Hytale was Acquired by Riot on April 16, 2020. The Riot team had long been on an advisory board and this allows the Hytale team to explore new avenues in their game

Q:Will the acquisition change Hytale?
A: Undoubtedly it will, but not in the way you might think. Riot has been taking a generally hands off approach leaving the team as it is and not making demands. Only intervening if the team asks for help. So we are going to be getting the same kind of game that was shown in the trailer, but that acquisition substantially helps Hypixel Studios financial stability and will help speed up progress with the game.

Q:Does Riot own Hypixel too?
A: No, the Minecraft Hypixel server is run by an entirely different company now, called Hypixel Inc.

Q:Will Hytale kill Minecraft?
A: Many were so amazed by the trailer and Hytales promises that they speculated that Hytale will be so popular that Minecraft will fall in popularity and never rise again. This is most likely not going to happen. Minecraft is just so big and it has an incredibly loyal fanbase. Hytale will provide competition and maybe, in the best of circumstances become even more popular than Minecraft, but it will not completely kill Minecraft

Q:Is Hytale just Minecraft 2.0?
A: No, Many seeing the trailer for Hytale saw a copy of Minecraft with a few new features. Hytale is a voxel based game and it was heavily inspired by Minecraft, but Hytale is supposed to be something different and the creators say that themselves. They want Hytale to be a unique experience from Minecraft. There are plenty of posts and videos out there explaining the differences between games also, if you would want to look into it.

Q:What is Hytales relationship with Mojang?
A: It is normal to assume that Mojang would be Mad and break ties with Hypixel for making a game that could rival Minecraft, but members of the Mojang staff stated that they were excited for what Hytale could bring to the table. Hytale's team, in an article for Edge Magizine, stated they they didn't want to rival Minecraft and that they had no intentions of fighting the game giant as they are appreciative of their roots.

About the beta and release
Q:When will Hytale release?
A: The Hytale team aims to get Hytale available to all players in 2021. Whether this means an open beta or a official release, we do not know.

Q:Will there be a beta?
A: Yes

Q:When will the beta release?
A: We don't know, but the most popular speculation thinks Q1 or Q2 2021

Q:How long will the Beta be?
A: We don't have this info yet

Q:Will the beta be open or closed?
A: We don't know, but everyone can sign up at the Hytale website (see below)

Q: Is the beta free?
A: Yes

Q: Will Hytale actually release or is it going to never come out?
A: Yes, Hytale has shown signs of being on track after initially pushing the game back due to an unexpected amount of attention. I made a post about this subject here that you are free to read and comment on.

Q:Can I sign up for the beta?
A: Yes, you can do so at the Hytale website here https://hytale.com/signup

Q:What will the beta include?
A: We do not know yet

Q:Will Hytale have free and continuous updates post launch?
A: Yes, the team will continue adding new and free content to the game after launch

About the team
Q:Who is making Hytale?
A: A team of around 50 or so developers in a company called Hypixel Studios LTD.

Q:Who is Noxy and Simon?
A: Simon, also known as Hypixel was the creator of the original Hypixel Minecraft server. He also was the former CEO of Hypixel Studios as well as Hypixel Inc. until he resigned and gave to position to Noxy when Hypixel Studios was acquired by Riot Games. Noxy is the current CEO of Hypixel Studios LTD.

Q:Where is the team based?
A: The developers work remotely, but a headquarters was recently purchased in Derry~Londonderry, Northern Ireland where QA, Executives and accountants will work.\)1\)

Q:Are they hiring?
A: Yes! Hypixel studios is currently hiring for several positions that can be found at https://hytale.com/jobs . Also keep a lookout for more openings as they are commonly announced!

Q:how does the team release information?
A: Most of the indepth information we have is from a series of Blog Posts the team releases at https://hytale.com/news . They also release information actively at the @Hytale twitter and many of the developers teams respective twitter handles.

Q:is there a website?
A: Yes, it is at https://hytale.com

Q:Is there an official social media for Hytale?A: Yes, you can find the official twitter at @ Hytale and hytalegame on Instagram. There are several others you can find on their website (look above)

Q: is there and official Discord server?
A: No, the team said that they want their focus to be on making the game as making an official discord could distract them from doing so. However there are several Hytale communities in Discord, such as HytaleHub and also Hytale youtubers personal servers.

Q:Why is the team so secretive?
A: Information dumps about Hytale are few and far in-between. Many ask why Hypixel Studios is so quite. Their answer is mainly because they want to avoid spoiling the game! They have been working a long time on this and I bet they want to share everything if they could, but in doing so we would then know everything and lose interest. Also the game is in development and they don't want to showcase something that is not representative of the final product.

Compounding issues leads to an overall TERRIBLE experience.

I want to start off by explaining that, while I tend to prefer IW CoD titles over Treyarch's, I want the best for CW, because each new title CoD has the opportunity to improve the franchise as a whole.
But sadly CW seems like a major step backwards.
Included here are the reasons why I feel the game is in a terrible state. I'm going to divide this into 3 subsections, Aesthetics, Gameplay, and Content, to more easily organize my thoughts without repeating myself or rambling on for too long. While many subjects will pop up in each section, I will try to stick to specifically the issues I have with that topic within that particular subsection.
Now, with all that out of the way, let's get into this.

Aesthetics

There's a whole host of issues that lead to a game that just looks really bad. From Guns and Camos to Operators and even visual effects, there just isn't a ton of upsides here, except for some actually visually striking maps (as much as people hate on Miami, it is a gorgeous map, IMO).
Just an little bit of context here, I am playing on PC with near-ultra settings, running at about 1440p, around 100fps. The game should look about the best it can.
Guns - Gun models are perhaps one of the biggest complaints I have with the game. They look like toys. Everything looks like low grade, 1990s plastic, not metal. The lighting on the models is also very poor, leading to a diffused look. It's like looking through a slightly opaque window at an airsoft gun.
Attachments - I will go over the gameplay implications of the gun attachments further down the post, but I wanted to touch on another glaring issue related to guns. That is Scopes and Sights. They look terrible. They suffer from the same issue above, making the models slightly hazy and unclear. That is bad for sights, which are what you will be staring through most of the time. Now, aside from the clarity issues, I also just hate the actual appearance of most of the sights, except for the Microflex red dost sight. All others either have way too small of a viewing window, or have large frames that block out much of your view. I know this is mostly subjective, but those are my thoughts.
Camos - My only real complaint here is that most of the camos look very washed-out, and that's while using Nvidia game filters to increase the color saturation and adjust tints. I will say that there are some cool camos available pretty early on, even though I don't think there are nearly enough, but I will go more into that later.
Operators - This may be part of the overall dated look to the game, but I feel like the Operator models just look like "last-gen" quality. This isn't specific to CW. MW suffers from the same issue. For something that we spend a lot of time looking at, you would think they would spend more time improving the models, be that Skeletons, Meshes, or Textures. Also, I hate how washed out the operator skins really are. Lots of dark and brown skins that make players much more difficult to spot in certain maps.
Visual Effects - Effects are hit or miss here. Smoke grenades and gas mines are well done, while Napalm Strikes are atrocious. I feel like I'm back in Minecraft, looking at burning block whenever a napalm strike lands nearby. Obviously that is a bit extreme and I don't really mean that the visuals are that bad, but they could definitely use some work.
Audio - The sound design is frustrating. I find much of the sounds in the game just overly repetitive and annoying, from the sound of guns shooting (which all sound the same to me) to the little sound you get on a kill. I hate that sound, and keep wanting to turn it off, but I feel like that would mess with my brain to much. I'm far to used to a sound playing when I get a kill that I probably rely too much on that sound to notify me that I can stop shooting. And as far as the guns go, They are too high pitched. I feel like the game needs to have an increase in bass without messing with higher pitch sounds through the different mixes. Yes, I have tried the different boosts, but when you start playing around with mixes, footsteps become harder to hear.

Gameplay

Now we get into how the game actually feels to play. There are some good aspect to the moment to moment gameplay loop, but the bad outweighs the good, in my opinion.
Guns - Guns mostly look and feel the same. I do think the guns are fairly balanced, which leads to a most being "viable" but there are some outliers that are... less than good. However, there are certain factors that punish you for trying new guns. I think all base guns, without attachments, feel way less effective than the same guns with "optimal" attachments. The base recoil of all guns is pretty damn high, but drastically reduced with any of the muzzle and grip attachments that effect those stats. While you unlock those attachments fairly quickly, it still taints your initial perception of each gun. I get that CW tries to limit camping and I feel that the increased recoil is one way they combat it. Increased recoil = smaller bursts to remain active = less time shooting = more time to allow the opposition to kill a camper. I will go over this in the Forced Playstyle point below.
Attachments - To put it simply, the formulaic attachment models and stats are boring and make no sense whatsoever. The odd magazine types are nonsensical. 40 and 50 round mags aren't common for many guns and were considered specialty sizes or even custom. Furthermore, you wouldn't need drum/snail mags for many of these capacities. In reality these style of mags would hold a minimum of 50 rounds. I know, I know, I'm trying to inject reality into a video game... But I prefer some sense of realistic or logical reasons behind gun mechanics and models in CoD games. Additionally, there are some attachments which just do not make sense for guns. Why have a Sniper grips or handles that increase slide speed, melee quickness, sprint to fire, etc.? It's a pointless inflation of attachments for no other reason than to artificially increase maximum gun ranks. I get they are trying to make everyhting uniform and open up the possibility for a run and gun, hipfire sniper loadout, but it just does not work or make sense.
Forcing Playstyles - That sorta leads into my next point. I feel like a large portion of CW aims to get everyone to play a run and gun playstyle. I can agree with trying to limit campers, but I also feel like way too many systems work against sniping or even just shooting from a distance. Semi Auto rifles and Snipers have a lot going against them. Visibility sucks at range, bullet velocity is too slow, and smaller headshot zones all make it extremely unfun to snipe. Add to that the fact that you have to constantly move or be on the radar... well, that just results in a bad experience. Don't get me wrong here, I am neither a camper nor a sniper, but I don't feel like the game should force players into a particular playstyle.
Visibility - This is sort of related to aesthetics above, but I feel it has more of a negative effect on gameplay, so I will list it here. The majority of players here know of the visibility issues, so I won't go into much detail. We all know visibility is bad. It's been commented on since the beta and yet not much has been done to correct the issues. One thing that I haven't seen much about is camera focus and shadows at ranges. It seems when you are aiming 50+ meters away, the game doesn't know where to focus, so everything beyond that point is increasingly blurry. This is may worse if you are aiming into shadowy areas. If you want to see what I am talking about, try playing on the holiday theme Nuketown. Go to the left side of the house on the Point A side of the map and aim through the doorway of the garage on the opposite side of the map. The most you can see is blurry shadows.

Content (aka "Content")

I have been pretty vocal on here about the lack of content in CW. Some have asked what I classify as good content, so let me give you a little background on what I enjoy in CoD. In MW, my main enjoyment came from quickly leveling guns so that I can then work on grinding camos. I have not quite gotten Damascus, because I hate launchers, but I have all weapons at max rank aside from a few of the seasonal gun releases. With that in mind, here are my issues with the available content in CW:
Guns - Treyarch has artificially increased "content" in the game by slowing down the rate at which you can rank guns. This is inevitably what is pushing me away from CW. I took the time to put together a rough calculation of the experience needed to rank up guns. Here's a link to the google sheet with my calculations. These are not exact numbers, only an estimate based on the weapon XP needed to level a few different primaries in MW and CW at different ranks. I pulled the XP requirements by looking at the guns in Warzone, which actually shows you XP values not just a bar.
Basic formula for MW is Rank * 40, rounded up to nearest 100 with a minimum of 500-600. I know there is a minimum XP per rank in the lower ranks, but im not exactly sure what that minimum is. I will try to look this up as soon as I can get back to my computer.
For CW, it's something like Rank * 100 for ranks 1-45 and Rank -1 or 2 * 100 for ranks above that. Basically, the last 10 or so ranks have a slightly slower curve to speed up those ranks ever so slightly. There is also a minimum XP of 1000-1200, so ranks below 10 will still require a decent amount of XP.
I have heard some people say that even though each rank takes more experience to level, CW has lower max ranks than MW, so the total time is the same, it just takes longer for each rank. That is clearly not the case. By my rough estimates, the XP requirements alone are 50% higher in CW. That's before XP rewards per kill are calculated. I do not have any comparison of MW per-kill XP versus CW, but I have seen that CW XP gains are all over the place. Nothing is consistent. And Treyarch seems to be adamant that players take as long as possible to rank up guns. This intention was made clear in this past weekend's "Double XP" event, which did NOT include Double Weapon XP. They want/need players to spend as much time as they can grinding guns because there isn't much other content.
Personally, I think that is pointless, because MW gun ranking grind was really quick and people are still playing it to this day. In fact, I think it might be doing better than CW despite the confusion caused by the launcher updates, making it harder to find and play MW MP.
Camos - As I stated above, my enjoyment of MW was the camo grind. I loved getting a new gun to max rank and then spending time completing camo challenges. It encouraged me to experiment with different attachments and offered decent skins at the same time. There were 10 different challenges, each with 10 different tiers, totaling 100 free camos for each gun.
Compare that to CW's total of 70 across MP AND Zombies. Now, Zombies does not interest me all that much, so I will probably never even try for those camos, but I want to be fair and give credit where credit is due. The problem I have with this design is that 1) there are far too few camos and 2) those 5 camo ranks per challenge take as many kills as similar camo challenges from MW. The grind is the same with half the payout.
Maps - Not much to say here for this final point other than I think there is a huge lack of maps. That needs to be fixed much faster than the current schedule, because playing the same 3-4 maps is SO repetitive.

Okay, so that was a ton of negativity, and I feel like I have to balance things out a little or I will devolve into a useless mountain of salt. So I want to bring up some positives before closing this out.
Map Design - Maps really are gorgeous, something that I did mention above. Miami is a breath of fresh air compared to MW's endless brown wasteland. Satellite, while also a brown wasteland, is unique. There hasn't been many desert maps, and Satellite really has some great elements to it, both in aesthetics and elevation/sight lines. You would think that an open map would allow Snipers to reign supreme, but the hills provide a lot of cover to get around that side of the map and if not, there is the other side, which is all tight corners and close quarters combat. Crossroads and Armada are also visually impressive, at least in my opinion.
Wildcards - I really like this system. While there are some clear winners here (seriously, if you aren't using Perk Greed, you should be) the system allows you to pick up something "extra" to further customize your build.
SBMM - Just kidding, it still sucks, but I do feel like it has improved in some ways over MW. In MW, I felt like I was always stuck around 1 K/D, but in CW, I am slightly ahead of that, and I can definitely feel some changes were made. Higher K/D games are more frequent and overall I feel like I struggle a bit less in CW. It's still way more frustrating than it should be and matches still are very swingy, but overall I think it is slightly better than MW.

Okay, I am going to stop there before I continue any farther down that path.
If you read this far, I apologize. I just had to get my thoughts off my chest. If this post never sees the light of day, that is probably for the best, as I am sure much of this has been said many times the past couple of months.

PC Part Picker. Where do I start. First of all, thank you so much for all of the help you guys have given me. If not for your team and your website I might not have built the PC I have now. I am very grateful to you guys for making such straightforward software with so many options. You guys are on top of everything, and I’d just like to thank you for all that you’ve done for the PC building community. That being said, onto the questions! 1. What are your favorite PC Parts? What’s your ideal/dream PC part list? 2. I’ve been having this problem recently because things are out of stock. When I make a parts list I often have to go into the page for the part to determine the actual cost for the part when it comes back in stock from the major retailers. When displaying the price, could you also add in parentheses something like: Price: $265 (Lowest: $200) Thanks for the kind words! I'll defer to Alex/Ryan on their favorite parts. For me I'd just like to get hold of a 3080 one day but I'm not in a rush. I'm still happily running this build: https://pcpartpicker.com/list/c99djX
On the stock / pricing issue, we might be able to look into something like that, but I can't make any guarantees.

Downmented: It's a bad time to be GPU shopping when the founde owner of PCPP can't even score a 30 series GPU BDsBiggest: This was my thought, how does he not have one? I honestly don't really need one and there are people who play way more intensive stuff than I do. I'm ok to wait.

On that note, what do you play?!! I still really enjoy Minecraft of all things. My oldest son started playing Skyblock and so that became a bit of a time sink. Used to play a decent bit of Civ and other Sid Meier stuff a long time ago. I'm just not that much of a gamer though. I'm legitimately terrible at FPS games, so I don't really enjoy them all that much. Minecraft lets me just piddle around and experiment with different creations, architectures, etc. And it's something I can play with my kids which is great until they trash my island.

As a fellow Minecraft buff, what are your thoughts on the best CPU for Minecraft at the moment? I know it depends more on CPU performance than GPU, at least in Java edition. I'll have to defer to the other guys on staff or the community because I honestly don't know. I'm playing on an i5-6600k/980 ti which has been more than enough.
the below is another reply to the original answer
Thanks for the response! How long have you had that build for? Roughly four years. I need to upgrade the GPU though because where I work in my house it's getting cold and ThoughtA is outpacing me on Folding at Home.
the below is a reply to the above
Do you have a rebuild planned for when the 3080 is back? Or just upgrading the current rig? It'll probably be a new build, but I'm not sure what it'll be. If 3080s come back in stock where I can get one, then I may start with that and plan the rest around it. Especially if it's something with a particular aesthetic or color scheme that I want to match.
Thank you for your site and all the countless hassle it saved me from. What do you guys and gals think is a thing our community could help you with ? Is there something like a roadmap for pcpp and what are you personally most excited about ? How should people give feedback to you and the other team members? Which channels are you preferring ? On which channels can I send my monthly thank you very much for your service messages ? Re: what buildapc can help with - this community has helped us so much over the years that I have no asks whatsoever. Just thanks. Thanks for letting us be a part of the community.
We don't have an official roadmap - I run the dev timeline like a software engineer who is terrible at time estimates. Things I promised eight years ago are still undone while other stuff jumps ahead. I'm most excited for benchmarking. I love performance analysis, and what we're building should be super cool. Lots, lots, lots of data, all in tightly controlled environments. The hard part is how to present relevant bits without overwhelming people with data.
For feedback, feel free to ping us on our site forums, our contact page, or on our discord channel. Discord is probably the least formal if it's something small, though I'm not on discord all that often these days (Ryan and Alex are though).
the below is a reply to the above
Ah, "agile" development. Nope! None of that. No agile practices here thanks. Just software development structured along my capricious demands...
the below is a reply to the above
IMHO, "we don't have a project management philosophy" is the best project management philosophy. As long as progress is being made and people are happy, management theory would just get in the way. For a while I was working on a codebase of several million lines of C++ in an org with 100+ other really smart engineers. I participated in an effort to modularize part of it, and I failed pretty badly. One of the most important things I learned was from an old Windows NT dev presentation that talked about Conway's Law. That really reshaped how I viewed architecture, teams, responsibilities, and communication patterns.
the below is another reply to the original answer
Did you consider licensing/sharing benchmarks from other hardware review sites, rather than developing a (presumably not-profit-generating) benchmarking competency? Alternatively, if you do want to generate benchmarks, have you considered monetizing them via a blog? We're planning on benching at a scale that most review sites don't do. Like an order of magnitude more pairings, runs, etc, with a bit more detail on each as well in terms of current consumption, temps, etc. All that all recorded on identical software setups for comparability. No one right now is doing that at the scale we want.
It's definitely not a profit center, and that's ok for me. I love benchmarking. Before PCPP I was part of a team working on optimizing compiler stuff. I loved writing compiler optimizations and testing the performance changes. So that whole side of things - determinism, accurate measurements, etc, I just really enjoy it. So PCPP in a way helps fund my desire to do that work whether it is profitable or not.
That being said, I do think it's a complementary feature set to add. While it may not monetize directly, I think the value it adds to the site will (hopefully) result in an incremental change in traffic/revenue.
So how does it feel to have a side project or yours become as popular in the computer world as google? You've become the only place I recommend newbies to go (other than reddit) for pc building help, and your site has become the most useful tool I've ever used outside of my daily IT work. You've created something not only powerfully useful, but well designed, smoothly operated, and pleasing to the eye. I don't really have much of question more just taking the opportunity to say thank you for creating a fantastic tool for the community. If a bigger company offers you millions to sell it I'd understand if you did, but please don't, I can't imagine the site being run any better than by it's original team! Thanks for the kind words. I gave my mom a shirt. A couple years ago someone recognized the shirt in rural east Texas. Like, she lives 30 minutes from the nearest town of 5,000 people. That was pretty wild. My mom was pretty excited lol.
I love having something that I helped build be a useful thing for people. That's immensely satisfying. (And it's a team effort, not just me by any stretch at all. The whole team helps every bit of what you see on the site).
On the other hand, I don't want or like to be out front. I'd rather be behind the scenes working on something and not really be noticed. I think that gets reflected, probably negatively from a business-first standpoint, in how I run things. I don't really push branding hard, don't push social media (Twitter, Instagram, etc), because I personally don't want to be out front there. I can engage here on reddit because I feel like I'm a part of the community here rather than some corporate/redditor relationship. From a business standpoint, I think there's a lot of growth possibility that PCPP hasn't tapped into because I want to avoid various social anxieties and whatnot.
the below is a reply to the above
Just know that if a company offers big bucks (and they probably will eventually) it is because they see an opportunity to leverage the base you built to make money and it most likely will be by selling the customers who trust you. They will probably do something like partner with large manufacturers or sellers and push their own products while if ignoring what is best for the people looking to create their own best build. Yeah that makes sense. We've made some decisions that probably wouldn't last long - not running ads, not selling user data. So really there seems to be two options: either we run this out until it dies on its own and we get to keep our ideals/positions, or we run out of energy and sell. I don't want to sell. I don't plan to sell. But I'd be lying if I said there weren't days where I feel so tired and just want a break for a bit. It's trying to find the balance of doing a job I love maintaining principles I value and also not destroying myself physically/emotionally/etc in the process.
the below is another reply to the original answer
Oh cool! If you don’t mind me asking, what area of East Texas? Did you grow up out here? I’m from out in Van, approx 30 min from Tyler. My close friends and I love PCPartPicker. I just used it to build my upgraded rig a couple of weeks ago. Nice! I grew up in Tyler (edit: but my mom currently lives 30 minutes east of Center, TX - basically on Toledo Bend reservoir and the TX/LA border). My electronics teacher in high school (Mr. Ray) was from Van. He was formative for me in pursuing electronics seriously by introducing me to VICA and electronics competitions.
Benchmark integration timeline when 🍿 Probably mid-2021. We're almost done with a building renovation where they bumped our building service from a 400A service to a 1200A service. Added AC capacity. That 800A is going toward bench... it's going to be fun. This is what I'm talking about https://imgur.com/a/rffuVin. Can't wait to get this all up and running.

I have a massive transformer that’s the size of a fridge I can’t seem to sell if you guys want it. It was meant for a Bitcoin farm but was never used. Cost $5000 I just want it gone it’s so heavy lol LOL thanks but we're good. They actually delivered the 1200A from pole mounted transformers. MEP guys were surprised, but the power company said they could do it. Sure enough they did. Old vs new pre-hookup: https://imgur.com/a/ODQlACV

Dude, you do AWS, dev, hiring, project direction, and building management? Your operation must be crazy efficient. Oh no I offloaded all the building management stuff to Jack. He's handled almost all the renovation work, which has been an absolute life saver for me. I just come in and throw wrenches in things by adding last minute requests for extra conduit runs from here to there, replace those windows, change that paint color, etc. Jack handles all communication and followups with the GC, subs, etc.
The other stuff I do do though. AWS (our infrastructure isn't that big really, a couple dozen EC2 instances, RDS, Redis, CloudSearch, Cloudfront, etc). Daniel handles the bits of Lambda that we use. I kinda enjoy the deployment / devops side of things, and I think it's important to have my fingers on the pulse of that whenever I'm designing new features. Helps me have a better feel for what kind of query impact different code or modeling decisions will have.
The hiring isn't much - we've averaged about one person a year and that's usually someone in our existing network of relationships. And project direction is pretty small right now since we shut down our cycling site. Back down to just one website makes it a lot simpler. We talk about what we want to do as a group a lot, so (I think) everyone has a pretty decent picture of where we're headed despite timelines not being nailed down strict.
the below is another reply to the original answer
What kind of benchmarks would you be running? Have you considered pulling data from places like passmark? Anything we can run deterministically and automated and that has license terms that allow unfettered publication of result data. We won't be pulling data from anywhere, passmark included. All the data will be from runs we do in-house.
the below is a reply to the above
May I ask why the focus on internal metrics vs just pulling them? Mainly because we can control all the variables and make them consistent across all our result pairs. We have some absolutely phenomenal performance analysis engineering expertise in house.
the below is another reply to the second answer
Unfettered publication of result data. Wow. Nice. As someone who likes playing with freely available datasets, I really appreciate this. Hard to learn data science without freely available data sets that regular people can have some level of subject matter expertise over to start to learn how to put data-driven stories together. Sorry, what I meant was that the license terms of the benchmark software have to allow us to publish the benchmark results without restriction. There is a popular benchmarks out today that requires the benchmark results be vetted by them first before publication. We'd have to manually send over bench results if we weren't using their bench platform (we're not, we have our own). Then wait for them to approve, and then we could publish. That's not viable when we're testing at the scale we plan to - it'd need to be automated at least but they couldn't offer that. And for benchmarking prerelease hardware under embargo, it'd mean that we would have no ability to publish data right when the embargo lifted. We'd have to wait however long for their manual review.
the below is another reply to the second answer
How will you be able to benchmark hard-to-get hardware? e.g. RTX 3090, Radeon 6800xt, and Ryzen 5000? Will the manufacturers send them to you? Or do you have to buy them? I think it's a mixture of both. On new release hardware it's helpful to have bench data when embargoes lift. But I also want to have store-purchased hardware as the main part of our hardware pool, however long it takes to acquire that. We can flag the benchmarks that come from manufacturer review samples - that way people know the source and can factor in review sample binning.
the below is another reply to the original answer
So once upon a time, I was gonna write a program that would pull benchmark and pricing data to build a list of best value parts, such that no part in the list had a better performing part at a lower price. A sort of definitive do-buy list to make it easier to pick parts. Once benchmarks are done, pcp would have all the infrastructure in place to make that happen in some form on the site, perhaps as a filter for picking parts or as a warning on the part/build pages? Yep.
the below is a reply to the above
sorry, I'm not sure what you're saying that to, I should have actually posed a proper question: Will you be implementing that? That's our intent, yeah. It may take us a bit to get there though.
the below is another reply to the original answer
There is...a lot... of metal shavings in that box. Ah I’m sure it’s fine it’s only 1200A. Oh at that point it was still all being hooked up. It's cleaner for sure.
Check this out - relative size difference between old and new...
https://imgur.com/a/xQD1fEY. (That's one Barry for scale.)
the below is a reply to the above
But how do we know how big Barry is if he's not holding a banana? Barry is approximately the same height as one marinelli.
A lot of people seem to think that you only host sellers that provide you affiliate kickbacks. Is there any truth to that? Have you ever allowed or disallowed a seller on the basis of affiliate money? How do you decide whether to host a seller or not? That's not true. We list several retailers without affiliate agreements. Affiliate relationships are often much much easier because they almost always already have price data access. That's the main thing we need.
Our choice on hosting a retailer largely depends on whether we feel they are good for users or not. If a retailer is being abusive to users or doing highly manipulative stuff, we'll remove them even if they're profitable. We've done that several times in the past. If a retailer also has highly inaccurate pricing, we'll delist for that too.
Yaaatttttt: Not sure if you are allowed to reveal this but what retailers have you delisted in the past? LightningProd12: They delisted MicroCenter in the US because they had too many in-store only deals and no way to tell the difference on PCPP's end. And not everyone can go to one, if you live in the Northwest the closest one can be 800-1000 miles away. Edit: This is mostly false, look at the comments below. ThoughtA: This isn't true at all. We want to have them on the site. We had some discussions with them, but they stopped responding.
the below is a reply to the above
Oh ok, I remember suggesting it a few years back on the forums and getting told they were delisted. EDIT - Forum post link: https://pcpartpicker.com/forums/topic/309304-request-add-microcenter-to-the-list-of-merchants I falsely remembered there being a reason but was told they were removed from the site. We did actually list their in-store deals. I put in a decent bit of code for that so that they only showed up if you were within a configurable radius of one of their locations.
It's a long story, but the gist of it is that we were waiting on some stuff that never came and things went silent. We reach out from periodically but nothing. It stinks - we'd be happy to list them.
You never know what you reception you'll get from retailers. Some are beating down the door to get on board - that's awesome. Others we have to prove that we're worth their time - that's not unusual. A few will say they want to work together, we get 80% of the way there, and then... silence. Or the key person you were working with takes a job somewhere else. And then some retailers basically say not just no, but h*** no. I'll never forget that one. For some retailers there's a strong aversion to something we do, whether it be price comparison or something else. But just know that if there's a retailer that is reputable and treats customers well, we're more than happy to work with them and get them listed.
the below is a reply to the above
Ohh ok, that sucks. On a side note, is there a story behind the "h*** no" retailer? They're, eh, no longer in business. Honestly probably dodged a bullet there.
the below is another reply to the original answer
Maybe this was asked already but still: are there any timeline/plan to add more countries to the country list? I am leaving in Austria and I have to use Germany to see the prices and availability of the parts. Moreover, I see German retailers and prices but not Austrian ones. We're continually adding new countries and retailers. Adding a country is just a few lines of code on our end - we do that when we have a retailer to add in a country we don't currently support. So really it's a matter of finding and adding retailers. If you have any you'd like to see, send us a note on our contact page and we'll take a look at it. Jenny reaches out to the retailers to see if we can get them on board. It usually takes a while to get in contact and get good data access.
the below is a reply to the original question
I already raised this issue to him several years ago - because it was blatantly in the open for users in Germany. You would get amazon affiliate links as "lowest" price, even though there are several other stores that are cheaper... He got angry quickly and gave me the same bs excuse. The top sellers with the top user ratings were never listed as cheapest even though they were. We list the buy box winner for Amazon. If you're saying we prune results for various marketplace sellers, well, you're wrong.
How's the team handling COVID? Is everyone working from home? What kind of challenges are arising? I sent everyone home in March. We haven't met as a group since. It's been ok - we just meet on video conferencing when we need to. Jack and Barry are up at the office overseeing the renovation which should be done mid-January. I'll probably be up there from January to April to do the benchmark network cabling and office rewiring (from cat5 to 6a+fiber) because I kinda enjoy cable crimping and punch downs. :)
the below is a reply to the above
The transition from cat5 to cat6 is worth? Yeah. We're not running 5e, just 5. It's what was in there from when we bought it. So that's not where I'd like it to be for good 1Gb.
Any chance we'll ever see some more filtering options for SSDs? It would be really handy to have the following * Filter by the primary storage type SLC/MLC/TLC/QLC/Optane/etc * Filter by whether the drive has a DRAM cache or supports Host Memory Buffer (HMB) I'd love to, but I think it'd cause a fissure I'm not sure how to fix. Right now we have SSDs and platter drives in the same category, but the specific filtering for each is different. To apply the really detailed SSD filters, I think they need to be their own category. Same with the HDD types. I don't know if splitting them up is the right path though, so I've been continually punting the issue down the road until we're forced to decide one way or the other.
the below is a reply to the above
Tsk tsk, don’t accumulate technical debt there Oh, no, it's quite the opposite really. Parametric part additions record the type and filter selections. Those added to a part list stay there forever - we never throw them away. So any filters we add never get removed even if we don't show them. Because of that, I try to be very deliberate in what we add and what we don't. Once I add a new part category or filter type, if I decide later it was a bad idea then it means I get to write lots of migration code. That's no fun.
Super excited for the an app version. Are you guys considering price tracking so that users can set alerts for when hardware drops to a desired price? Yeah. We have that on the site already with email alerts. But the PWA provides them via browser push notifications (on platforms that support that). I have that all working in a beta test mode (for staff only) right now and it's feeling pretty solid.
the below is a reply to the above
As a front-end engineer, what's your stack look like for the PWA? Basically built on top of our existing responsive site (Python, Django). I didn't want to spend a lot of time migrating to another framework, so instead spent the time kind of standardizing our own API-ish setup and then handling the caching or offline modes for that as needed. We went responsive with PWA to avoid maintaining three separate codebases (web, iOS, Android), but it's looking like we may go native in the end anyway. This buys us some time at least.
the below is another reply to the original answer
So not iOS? Right. :(. I understand there are some workarounds to get push notifications through wallets and whatnot, but that feels pretty hackish to me. We might end up going native on iOS at some point to get good notification support there.
How hard is it keeping up with and adding new item releases (not only the new 3000 series graphics cards from nvidia but also possibly unknown stuff like network cards, etc)? Are there any items you decide not to add or do you try to list everything you can? New GPUs are pretty easy. CPUs are ok, sometimes a pain depending on the chipset/bios situations. Motherboards are terrible, especially the last few years. Cataloging all the M.2 ports, their constraints (PCIe in this slot disables that SATA, etc) is a major pain.
There's some stuff, particularly on cases, where there are compatibility constraints that are not economically viable to model. We know what the constraints are, but to model them all across 30k+ parts would make data entry so slow that we'd never finish.
We try to hit the main product categories, but we'd love to expand that. It's really an issue of how time consuming and costly it is to do the data entry for it versus how often it's used.
the below is a reply to the above
So Wikipedia seems to be crowd sourced, and works pretty well. Maybe some of the more laborious data entry parts could have a crowd source entry option, but be flagged as such when people bring up anything containing those results (a disclaimer).. It's just not reliable enough. It has to be super accurate, and it's not something I'd ever feel comfortable outsourcing.
the below is a reply to the above
Have you tried asking the manufacturers to get involved? You might just be big enough. When new releases are coming out we sometimes get data ahead of time. Cases are pretty common. Motherboards are a lot harder, because of embargoes and even BIOSes and manuals not finished days before release. Some of the constraints we see are pretty one-off situations that make it hard to provide some sort of standardized input form for though.
the below is another reply to the original answer
what if you let companies input their own data for their products. I don't trust that to be accurate enough. We routinely find bad spec data even on manufacturer sites.
the below is another reply to the original answer
I imagine that PCPP is large enough now to direct traffic to or away from various retailers in volumes they will care about. Like how Google went from small to large. Given that, probably PCPP should begin leaning on retailers to provide product data in an ingestable format, making data entry moot. We work with retailers to provide the right data in feeds for sure. But the hard part is that not all retailers have the technical expertise on hand to do it (or for smaller retailers, the margin and profitability to pay for that expertise). The back-and-forth to get updated feed frequency, proper part numbers, stock status, etc - it's non-stop. Brent and Jenny bear the brunt of that.
I know you've been vocal about not opening up a merch store for personal profit, but would you ever consider a merch store where all proceeds go towards your well building charity? We did this once. My accountant was like, "please don't."
Basically if we buy a thousand shirts and give them away it's super easy - they just get marked as a marketing expense and we give them out however we see fit. But as soon as any of them are sold, you have to track inventory, cost basis, etc. It's a lot more tedious and last time it was maybe a couple shirts a week - enough to invoke packaging and transport overhead but not enough to be efficient. So we instead just give them away at various bapc milestones and donate from our affiliate income instead.
the below is a reply to the above
Kinda funny reading this while wearing the hoodie! It’s easily the comfiest hoodie in my closet. Oh, major props to Phil for that. He picked it out. I love mine too. We printed some smaller ones for kid sizes and my oldest son tries to sleep in his.
transam617: Philip, Thank you for 10 years of your indispensable help. Over that time, there were probably millions of visitors to your website who have had their PC building experience improved or made possible through the use of your wonderful tool. But specifically: Since 2014, our little corner of reddit (now 10K subs) cabalofthebuildsmiths, has been more effective, and has helped more people as a direct result of your website tool, than from any other tool we have available. We pride ourselves on giving builds to customers where they can reliably buy every part we pick, and be sure they will work as expected. This process takes research and a lot of effort, but the highly accurate, effective communication of pcpartpicker (for all the countries you cover) is the foundation of our process. Thank you for making the messy world of PC parts a little more bearable, thank you for making it all possible, and a big thanks from us, cabalofthebuildsmiths. transam617 kokolordas15 dmz_dragon danyulz bramblexd Thanks for your kind words, and thanks for all the work you all do to help builders!
What happened to the youtube channel? Loved the build videos and interviews you had while it was still running. We moved buildings a couple years ago, and decided to pause on them while we renovated the new space for filming and benchmarking. The renovation is finishing up likely mid-January - it took waaaay longer than we originally thought. If we had known it'd be that long we probably would have figured out some interim plan. So once that reno is done, we'll probably start ramping up content again. I'd guess mid-2021 or so.
[deleted] My first computer was a an AMD K5-133. That was late 1996 I think and I was in college. My friend and I ordered our mobo+CPU off an ad on a magazine page. I bought his old case and an 80MB HDD off of him. Ran Windows 3.1. We played Warcraft 2 across a null modem cable - that was probably the most fun I've ever had with PC gaming. Floating point on that thing was terrible though. Playing a 64kbps MP3 chewed up like 60% of the CPU.
My roommate introduced me to Quake 2, specifically Action Quake 2. Loved that game. I started running a website on the dorm network on it that got pretty popular. But queries on the db would tank my Q2 framerate so I put in code to disable queries while I was playing.
the below is a reply to the above
tiger direct? No, it was some small place out of the northeast. I mean, that was pre-internet-shopping days. Wrote a check, hand wrote what we wanted on the order form, mailed it, and waited weeks. No phone calls, no email confirmations, nothing. My kids have no idea what that was like.
Fun fact, I got banned from PCPartPicker for adding a purple dildo from Amazon to my build. Yeah that'll do it. User code of conduct / ToS and all.
the below is a reply to the above
Boooo. Thats kinda weird, especially for private/personal builds. Most of the retailers we partner with have as a part of their terms that our site not contain NSFW material. I get some people think it's funny but it can get us shut down, and I'm really not ok with that.
I've used your site so many times and I even met some of the team in Austin outside Dreamhack. Thanks for all you do! Who has the most powerful computer on the staff and what are they running? I think most powerful computer probably goes to manirelli right now.
Do you have any career opportunities at the company? I have a couple years of marketing experience, but I can’t find a job in these tough times. At least I’ve been learning python so I can get better at data management. Unfortunately we're not hiring right now. :(
the below is a reply to the above
Mind if I ask where you typically post jobs when you are hiring? Greenhouse.io, LinkedIn, Indeed, all of the above? Usually it's someone we have an established relationship with. We haven't ever posted a job listing to date.
Are you going to work on an official PCPartPicker API so people don't have to break ToS by scraping? No. I'd prefer to offer sufficient service that people don't need to scrape.
Most scrapers use up a lot of resources or don't even do cursory things like follow robots.txt crawl delay specs. It's really frustrating. I'd like to spend my time focusing on user benefitting features than blocking abusive crawlers.
gordonv: A cached CLI/SDK that draws from a CDN (not your web server) would be cool. You'd provide sufficient service, reduce processing cost, and get usage stats. The best way to defeat crawlers is to defeat their purpose. Make scraping look idiotic. Heck, mock scrapers in your HTML with an URL to your API. Add a little wit to that wisdom. Add AWS Cloudfront and now you have 200+ servers in the USA distributing your CLI with authentication to 3 million calls for $20 a month. Some leet stuff. Just noticed a sprinkle of posts calling for an app. If you spec CLI/SDK along with app development, killing 2 birds with 1 budget stone. We're rolling out a PWA (hopefully) before the end of the year.
the below is a reply to the original question
invisi1407: Perhaps a better question is, why is there a need for scraping? Could that need be satisfied by new/improving features on PCPP? MLG_G0D: Because integrations with PCPartPicker would greatly benefit the PC building community. Constantly navigating to websites can get tiresome, especially on low spec machines. Automation is great. invisi1407: I understand, but exactly which integrations are people looking for? I get it, but I also understand why PCPP isn't interested in having a public, free API. MLG_G0D: I was thinking about integrating PCPP functions into a reddit/discord bot. invisi1407: Not unresonable, but you do understand how it takes away any earnings from advertisements and what have we on their website, yeah? It seems like they are a small company spending an enormous amount of time on the data they are presenting, so I don't think you'll ever see a free public API anyway. Perhaps a paid one, but I don't suppose many would be interested in that anyway. MLG_G0D: Seems reasonable. I'm just a massive fan of companies being open to their userbase, but I guess PCPartPicker hasnt quite grown to the point where thats economically feasible. There's more to the picture. On pricing data: We're not the source of pricing data as that comes from the retailers. We have various agreements in place where they give us that data to display on our site or to market their products in ways they allow us to. We don't have permission to then hand that data to a third party to do whatever they want to. If we make it available to someone else via an API, we're breaching terms of our agreement, which in turn makes us lose our affiliate deal and price access. Boom, business is dead. Basically if you need that data, go to the source (the retailers) and negotiate with them.
For product data: We've invested a lot of man years to build our data set, and some of that data helps us maintain a competitive advantage over copycat sites. Making it easier to retrieve that data isn't something I'm keen on. There are other sources of product data available that are more expansive than what we have anyway. I'd suggest pursuing that if you want to build your own hardware related site stuff.
On API stuff for partlists and markdown: If you just want a discord bot, I'd be happy to chat through what it is you're looking for to see if that's something we could support officially on our end. We have our own discord server bot that uses an internal API to do partlist embeds.
Last bit - publishing an API adds an additional thing for us to maintain. It's a maintenance and support burden. Even an unofficial API is. It becomes something that I have to test and not break any time I refactor code around it. We're a small company, and that's not really an area I want to allocate resources around if it's not a revenue generating thing.
Thanks a lot to you guys! With your site, I managed to make 3 separate lists, and now my dream of building a PC is coming true. Maybe you could add recommendations based on what the person has on their list, such as a cheaper but better graphics card, etc I think recommendations are a possibility once we have our in-house benchmark data in place. But that'd be a ways down the road.
Thanks for your work, and since this is an AMA, simple question: Which is the best flavor of ice cream and why? Amy's Ice Cream here in Austin. Belgian Chocolate. It's just wonderful but I haven't been there in almost a year now.
manirelliPCPartPicker: I will second Amy's but I'm partial to the Mexican Vanilla flavor.
Wow. What a cool thing to see on Reddit. This is the first AMA I’ve ever replied in/commented on. I’m brand new to PC (3 year macbook user here, and besides a brief stint with a windows Hp laptop on which I played Rollercoaster tycoon and club penguin with “back in the day” I have never had need for the site. Until last month). I’m grateful the site exists, and it’s quite intriguing to me how you manage to create and maintain (emphasis on maintain) such an EXTENSIVE database of parts. I know it’s part of your life, however it astounds me to see these parts that seem so very minuscule, always appear. Have you considered, or maybe there already is and I simply am blind or don’t know about it. Have you considered adding any sort of personal or user based rating system regarding parts? Or a warning system for parts with known issues out of the box? Our ratings are from users, but we only allow ratings/reviews from completed builds. That way we know that the review is from someone who actually built with it (versus say a 1 star review from someone mad they couldn't buy it).
We do offer some warnings on known issues, but it's something we may expand in the future.
